Background
My grounding in web application development was using Active Server Pages back in early 2001 as part of my MSc IT. We developed a staff-student appointment system in a team of 4. I went on to use ASP extensively in my first post at the University of Teesside's Corporate Communication Unit. Here I built many educational web application activities in conjunction with educational advisers. These applications were developed and used for educational purposes, as well as for one-off promotional days. I also re-designed and re-built the website for the Meteor project. This scheme supported a "Raising Aspirations" agenda at the grass roots of the University's student recruitment activities.
Experience
The Meteor website was administered using a self-built content management system. I used December's web development methodology to help plan, research and design the site.
I used a combination of ASP, HTML, Javascript, and CSS to create the framework for the site. The backend database was implemented in Access. The separation of presentation from business logic is notoriously limited using ASP. I employed several of the best practice techniques to control the organisation of the site's resources, including: include files for ASP code, a selection of css files & javascript libraries.
Current Usage
In my current role, as our helpdesk software is written in ASP, I am often called upon to make small customisations or troubleshoot minor issues. My extensive knowledge of ASP assists in these requests.
