The Manufacturing Information System (MIS) at ADVANSA, Wilton, was developed to replace legacy applications mainly based on SuperCo, Questar and SetCim platforms as well VB desktop applications. I was employed as a developer for my ASP.NET (C#) and SQL Server database experience which was the new platform for the replacement system. The project was 9 months in length and development phases were managed in 6-8 week chunks. At the time I worked within a team of 11 others and following the project I was employed as the sole administrator of the system.
Since project end I have developed further required enhancements as agreed at monthly meetings of our "User Group". Most developments have required significant integration outside of tool support within both the codebase and database. I have also made progress with the non-functional requirements of the system, such as backup strategy, system stability, performance issues, architecture of the codebase, etc. Improvements of these aspects have been of benefit to the medium-long term maintenance of the system. I have particularly enjoyed working in these areas on a 24-7-365 system which is relied upon in a critical operational context.
Although I present screenshots opposite to show the ASP.NET web forms which I have developed for this system, it does no justice to the raft of applications which make up the MIS.
- A semi-continuous stream of data from approx 3000+ plant-based intruments is recorded by a SQL Server based historian (Wonderware InSQL). This data source is accessible through extensions to SQL allowing for a variety of queries on real-time data from across the system. A number of post-project issues with this product meant a lot of on/off-site liaison with external consultants.
- A calculation suite based on SQL Server Jobs also provides a track on derived values for operational convenience. I have been involved in the maintenance of these calculations to troubleshoot malfunctions arising, integrate new calcs and improve notification of errors.
- In addition, I have developed 3 Windows Services. The most recent has processed XML data from plant-based mobile devices used to capture manually entered data. These operational checks were previously handled by a paper-based system. The data import has been integrated with existing generic input and reporting structures. These facilities have been significantly enhanced to accommodate new business requirements.
I continue to work on the system as part of my increasing responsibilities at ADVANSA.
